Week 1 - Follow the Material

Updated: May 25, 2022

Discover - multiple stories and connections based on materials

Explore - theoretical and historical contexts for materials

Propose - speculative transformations and interventions

Apply - thinking and express this in a proposal for the Major Project detail design

Select - and instruct on applying and processing materials

Communicate - material narrative and design intent

To be inspired and discover new materials I went to the New Forest. Here I was surrounded by wildlife, different elements and plenty of greenery. I picked up leaves, bark, pine cones, ect. All inspired different parts of my work and helped me create figure 3. What I hadn’t realised is that under every step I took was 300 miles worth of fungi glowing through the Forrest. This is mycelium, it has more networks that our brain has neural pathways and works the same way.

Palimpsest : a material story

(palímpsēstos = "again" + "scrape")

Task 1

  1. Strip Back - scrape off/ cut into/ paint over all, or part, of the drawn surface

  2. Find - materials connected with the IMP

  3. Overlay - the drawing with NEW materials

  4. Reflect

1 - Strip Back

Stripping back a concrete column to see what's inside

2- Find

3 - Overlay

Adding materials found onto drawing

Creating more dimension with the materials to the drawing

Using the bark, leaves and acorn to go through the drawing

Adding levels to it

4 - Reflection

When I peeled back layers from the concrete column I found many hidden aggregate materials, Some being: sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag and flint.

I wanted to add to the original structure by growing a new interior with more organic materials, I took to nature to inspire me. Finding bark, acorns, plants, moss and earth.

With these materials I made my flat A3 drawing into a 3D visual piece of abstract work. The plants are growing through the paper, some ripping it and some adding extra layers that are strengthening it.
